Half way to 70

That was what I wrote on my buddy's birthday card a few years ago when he turned 35.

And now I'm half way to seventy, myself.

It's all good. You're only as old as you feel, right?

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. That's a good way to end a short post...

200 miles so far in 2007

So I completed my third half-marathon.

My goal (as stated here in two previous posts) was to complete the 13.1 miles in under two hours, preferably by several minutes. My half-marathon time in the Las Vegas run four years ago was 1:59:55.

I was this close (holds thumb and index finger about a centimeter apart) to finishing under two hours. My wristwatch time: two hours and two seconds. Official race time: two hours eight seconds.

I placed 93rd out of about 300 runners. 57 out of 109 men. 14 out of 25 men between the age of 30 and 39. Not that I analyze the results like a geek or anything.

The course went 6.5 miles down the Potomac, then we turned around and ran back to the start. Uphill. And against the wind. I might have preferred that we started by running uphill and into the wind, but hey, it's not my course...

Overall, I'm pretty pleased. A bit behind the middle of the pack is where I've usually found myself, and I have no shame about that. I started and finished strong, and in my training I both achieved a level of fitness I haven't seen in years, and I logged a personal sustained pace record (I held a 7:40 pace for 1.6 miles).

While I'm not sure I want to subject my body to the stress of a full marathon, I do believe I'll run a half marathon every year or two or three for a while. Beat that 1:59:55 I will :)

p.s. I'm thinking about getting "Shut Up And Drive" tattooed on the back of my hand so other drivers will be able to see it. Anybody got any Baked Lays? Them things are great. Almost as good as Beringer White Merlot. To. Die. For. Only thing better is eating/drinking barefoot.
